I downloaded the new drivers (173.14.09) from Nvidia and installed them. Version 96.43.23 (legacy GPUs) For support of GeForce 2, GeForce 3 and GeForce 4 GPUs (supported devices). I had the nvidia drivers that ubuntu installs (169.12).
